Despite the government support for development of the west in recent years, due to historical and geographical reasons, economic and social development in these remote areas still lags behind. Consequently, education in the western regions also lags behind; this is particularly the case in poor mountainous areas. Poorly equipped classrooms, inadequately trained teachers and shortage of teaching and supplementary materials are the general phenomena. Due to lack of funds, hundreds of old and dangerous school buildings which lack timely repairs and renovation threaten the lives of teachers and students.
Therefore, since 1995, the Amity Foundation has been working in these areas to assist in rebuilding dilapidated primary school buildings, improving teaching and learning conditions and facilities in schools, accommodating students and teachers in safe and secure school premises. This project has been a success and over the past ten years, The Foundation had raised almost RMB 20 million to build more than three hundred new schools. More than twenty thousand students have directly benefited from the project by to safe, new and spacious classrooms. Usually, rebuilding a teaching building of 500 sq. meters would cost RMB 40 to 50 million, but the actual cost depends on the scale of the project itself. Projects are financed by all three partners involved in the project; aid from The Amity Foundation, contribution from the local government as well as local participation including labour.
The project for provision of educational facilities in mountainous regions is aiming to expand both within and outside the country. With our twelve years work experience in providing improved access to quality education, we expect to work closely with other benevolent organizations and individuals to contribute more significantly to improve the standard of education, teaching facilities and to accommodate students in safe and comfortable school premises and classrooms
