37 teachers attended Amity’s Summer Conference (27 returning and 10 new) in Nanjing, held on August 24-28. Also attending were three young adult volunteers and one sending agency representative. The ten new teachers were coming fresh from their August orientation in Yangzhou, (the Summer Training Program).
Tens of millions of people across south western, central and eastern China are grappling with the aftermath of floods that have killed over 300 people. Since the start of June 2007 heavy rain has pounded regions in Southern, Southwestern and Northwestern China. Heading the list of flood-stricken areas are Anhui, Jiangsu and Chongqing. The continuous heavy rain has led to devastating flash floods, landslides and mudflows.
During the hottest days of summer, 22 students from Yale University and Hunan University came together to offer their help to children of migrant workers in Nanjing. During this 4-day ‘summer camp’, they enlightened the pupils and entertained them, encouraging them to be active, bold communicators. It was also a good opportunity for the American and Chinese college students to learn more of the life of migrant workers in China and the hardships they meet.
