I still remember the first time I met people living with HIV. It was 7 o'clock in the morning after a 14-hour long distance train journey. After arriving at our destination we went to the church. There we found one family waiting for the pastor, a couple with a three-year old boy. The husband had been involved with selling his blood in the past, had become infected with the HIV virus in this process and had passed on the virus to his wife and son.

When AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) was first reported in the West in the early eighties of the twentieth century, we in China uttered a sigh of relief at our physical distance from the incurable, fatal disease. This optimism did not last long.

(June 2003) Launched on 1st November 2002 and supported by Amity's long-term partner, EED, Amity has been continuing with its AIDS prevention projects in Yunnan Province while starting new training workshops in HIV/AIDS public awareness and care in Henan Province, both initiatives taking place within local church networks.
